The Shoenfelt Law Firm was established in 1998 when Oscar L. Shoenfelt, III left the partnership of Moore, Walters, Shoenfelt and Thompson to pursue his statewide medical malpractice, automobile injury, personal injury, and business litigation practice. Mr. Shoenfelt graduated from LSU School of Law in 1979 and worked in the defense firms of Adams and Reese (New Orleans, 1979-1983) and Watson, Blanche, Wilson and Posner (Baton Rouge, 1983-1985) prior to joining Moore, Walters (1985-1998). While pursuing his law career Mr. Shoenfelt also acted as a sports agent for professional athletes from 1988-2006. Mr. Shoenfelt was joined by his daughter, Mary Katherine “Katie” Shoenfelt, in 2009 when she graduated from LSU Law School.
Katie Shoenfelt has assisted her father in the areas of medical malpractice, automobile and personal injury, and has expanded the firm’s legal practice to the areas of family law, which includes divorce, child custody, child support, spousal support (alimony), separation of community property, prenuptial agreements, postnuptial agreements, restraining orders, judicial separation, paternity issues, and other related matters.
Oscar and Katie Shoenfelt are licensed to practice in the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States District Courts of Louisiana, the Eastern District, Middle District, and Western District.
Oscar Shoenfelt and Katie Shoenfelt are licensed to practice in all Louisiana state courts, including the Louisiana Supreme Court. In 1996 Oscar Shoenfelt was before the Louisiana Supreme Court in Smith v. State of Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, 670 So.2d 543 (La. 1996). The Court found in favor of Mr. Shoenfelt’s client and the court’s decision changed Louisiana law, granting patients a claim for loss of chance of life in medical negligence cases.
